"We initially used a data centre in Poland to operate our sites. In view of the increasing popularity of online auctions and more than 1.5 million new registered users per year on our site, we wanted to ensure that our offer met the increasing requirements. We decided on high-density hosting, to ensure that the required performance is available and that the TelecityGroup can offer first-class service in this area."

Christian Maar
Allegro, CIO

The Allegro Group runs online auctions and similar services for more than 12 million users in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, the Ukraine, Russia and Estonia. The Allegro Group belongs to the South African media group Naspers.

The requirement

The Allegro Group operates more than 30 e-commerce websites in ten Eastern European countries, thus enabling their more than 12 million registered users to bid on articles ranging from cars to clothing. More than 9 million auctions are currently active. As this number is increasing by 40% every year and the Allegro Group wants to continue to offer their customers reliable and safe experiences, they decided to revise their existing IT infrastructure. In order to meet the Allegro Group’s demands of becoming the largest European online auctioneers, their IT infrastructure needs to be accommodated in state-of-the-art data centres.

The result

The Allegro Group and TelecityGroup jointly developed an individually tailored solution to enable optimum access to the Allegro websites from all over Europe. For this purpose, the Allegro Group used a completed managed “high-density solution” in one of the Frankfurt TelecityGroup data centres. Due to the special characteristics of auction portals, the IT infrastructure must be able to cope with enormous traffic spikes. Frankfurt is becoming an increasingly important Internet node in Europe and TelecityGroup operates the largest German commercial Internet node DE-CIX there. Thanks to the large number of carriers present, the environment provides a high level of connectivity, which copes with the demands of high traffic bandwidths.

TelecityGroup’s data centre in Frankfurt offers a safe, reliable environment with a high level of connectivity. The resulting protection against downtime is of vital importance for e-commerce companies. “Online auction houses“ place specific requirements on the infrastructure that is required to support their business model. Connectivity is crucial for ensuring outstanding user performance in the various regions. Thanks to the partnership with the Internet Exchanges, the TelecityGroup’s computer centers are ideal locations for these companies".
